Exploratory research on the development of recyclable e-commerce suitable packaging

At: University of Twente

Fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) are increasingly being sold through e-commerce. Often, the packaging of these goods is not optimised for this retail chain, and, on top of that, for the recycling process.

Therefore, in this thesis, new FMCG packaging possibilities are explored with a specific focus on recyclability and e-commerce suitability. This is done through a combination of literature and design research.

The results of the literature have been applied during the improvement of an existing shampoo bottle. The final concept consists of a mono-material bottle in a paper box. Both the bottle and the paper box are highly recyclable. Additionally, the box enhances e-commerce suitability.

However, it is advised to determine the effect of the product-specific retail chain on the packaging, prior to the design process. So that design tailored implementations regarding e-commerce suitability can be made effectively.
