Design of a material selection tool; A case study in finding a suitable material for packing vinyl records more sustainable

At: University of Twente (Novel-T)

The aim of the assignment was to find a new material for the outer sleeves of vinyl records which is better for the environment. The impact of a product on the environment is based on the carbon footprint of the whole process, so from obtaining the material to becoming waste. Carbon footprint is the amount of CO2 that is emitted into the environment during a certain process. For more guidance during the research, a tool has been created that will guide as a step-by-step plan for finding a material to make current products more sustainable.

The results show that HDPE and PLA are both materials with a lower carbon footprint than the currently used materials. From these two materials, PLA is the most beneficial and therefore the advice is to use this material for producing the sustainable outer sleeves.
