A re-design of the DRS probe for breast conserving surgery
At: Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI)
A measurement tool with optical measurements is used during breast conserving surgeries. Breast conserving surgeries is one of the treatments of breast cancer. During a surgery, a tumor will be removed locally while trying to leave as much healthy tissue as possible. The technology (DRS) makes use of light and will help to distinguish healthy tissue from malignant tissue. The current design of this tool was not ideal for use during surgeries. Not all tumour locations and sites could be reached. Therefore, a new design has been developed that will be easier in use. With a thinner shaft and an angle, measurements during surgeries can be performed better.
