Design for and from Recycling: A designer guide for plastic packaging
At: University of Twente
More and more attention is given to sustainability, also in the packaging industry. Packaging is designed to be recyclable, but in order to close the material loop, another step is necessary. The packaging also needs to be made of recycled material. This thesis provides a tool that allows packaging designers to Design for and from Recycling (Df2R). The tool is tested by redesigning an AXE shower gel bottle, proving it is possible to make packaging both sustainable and attractive. The tool overcomes two barriers that are experienced in the field; the poor quality of the material can be improved by using the Design for Recycling standards, where the Design from Recycling standards bridge the gap in knowledge that currently withholds companies from using recyclate.
