Wright was right: The design of a new mobile bar and a not so new design philosophy

At: The Horst, University of Twente

In the context of the design of a mobile bar for the Horst building, a design process was established connected to a design philosophy inspired by the concept of form follows function. The mobile bar design proved useful as an evaluative tool for testing the hypothesized outcome of the use of the process. This hypothesis was proven mostly true.

As a result of developing and evaluating the design process, the simultaneous, implicit, nature of the relationship between form and function was revealed. The perspective on their relationship closely identifies with that of Frank Lloyd Wright: "form and function should be one." The process of designing the mobile bar therefore led to a deeper understanding of his vision on design, and a suggested design process that facilitates it.
