Holtman, K.
User-centred redesign of Dutch traffic control simulation interface
At: ProRail
The current simulation interface used to train Signalers, who oversee and manage the train traffic, is outdated, unintuitive, and physically and cognitively straining. This creates the situation in which the trainers spend more time navigating the system, rather than guiding their students. To improve this, the user feedback was grouped into eight problem clusters. Each cluster will then be prioritised and redesigned based on user experience, technical feasibility, and stakeholder feedback. The result is eight different redesign advice that make the current interface more intuitive and ergonomic to use, so both the cognitive and physical strain of trainers is reduced. The goal of the redesign is to relieve the burden on trainers and to shift the attention from operating the simulation to aiding the students, to make training more efficient.
