A Maturity Model for Implementing Learning Factories in Technical Universities

At: University of Twente

In recent years, Learning Factories (LFs) have emerged as a promising educational approach, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical experience. Their flexibility and wide range of applications make them suitable for various contexts, including academic institutions and industrial settings. However, the heterogeneity of LFs has made it difficult to create a one-size-fits-all model for building or consolidating a strong LF. This paper outlines the initial steps towards developing a more comprehensive, context-aware Maturity Model (MM) for Learning Factories, specifically designed with technical universities in mind. The proposed model introduces a maturity scheme based on the interdependence of key variables and their respective levels of development. The objective is not to achieve complete saturation in all areas, but rather to find an internal balance between variables that can support the growth or consolidation of the LF over time.
