Redesign of the Gynecological Speculum

At: BAAT Medical

Despite advances in medical technology, the vaginal speculum has seen little innovation and continues to cause significant discomfort and anxiety during gynecological exams. This project proposes a redesigned speculum informed by vaginal ergonomics and psychological factors. A new three-blade design with a rounded tip, optimized dimensions, and a progressive-opening mechanism was developed using CAD modeling and Finite Element Analysis. The new mechanism allows gradual, controlled dilation and reduces strain on vaginal walls, potentially lowering pain. It also minimizes noise and catching tissue, addressing common psychological stressors. While further refinement is needed, the design offers a patient-centered alternative that maintains clinical functionality and lays the groundwork for a more empathetic, adaptable instrument in women's healthcare.
