Minimising Packaging Volume for lekker's E-Bike Shipping

At: LEKKER bikes

This thesis explores the challenge faced by LEKKER, an Amsterdam-based e-bike company, of high shipping costs due to bulky packaging. Since LEKKER ships its bikes 98% pre-assembled for customer convenience, large boxes trigger expensive volumetric weight charges. The project aimed to design an optimal packaging solution for the Amsterdam and Jordaan models that reduces shipping volume and costs, while maintaining ease of assembly and safe transport. User research revealed that many customers were willing to handle minor assembly in exchange for lower shipping fees. Based on this, the final concept, The Bike Stand, reduced assembly to 95%, cutting packaging volume by 22.7% and costs proportionally. The solution transforms packaging into an active assembly aid, balancing efficiency, protection, and customer satisfaction.
