Redesign of a High-Pressure Reverse Osmosis Recirculation Pump: integration, cost reduction, and ceramic bearing optimization

At: ETS Design Limited

This project focused on redesigning a high-pressure reverse osmosis (RO) pump used by ETS Design Ltd. to reduce cost, part count, and manufacturing complexity without sacrificing performance. The original third-party ceramic bearing assembly was replaced with a custom, application-specific design, tailored to the pump's actual loads and operating conditions. By integrating components, simplifying geometry, and removing redundant parts, the total part count was reduced from 20 to 15, and material volume decreased by 12.6%. Hydraulic performance improvements were achieved by streamlining flow paths and eliminating unnecessary gaps. Supported by finite element analysis, tribological testing, and manufacturing feasibility checks, the redesign meets small-series production needs and provides a solid foundation for future prototyping, testing, and potential scaling to larger production runs.
