Assembly error reduction system in high precision manufacturing: for VDL enabling technologies group

At: VDL Enabling Technologies Group

This thesis addresses reducing human-caused assembly errors in high-precision manufacturing at VDL Enabling Technologies Group (VDL ETG), focusing on components of ASML's NXE and EXE lithography machines. The main problem was incorrect serial number marking, including wrong orientation, position, or number. The project aimed to design a product/system to reduce marking errors while improving traceability, efficiency, and quality costs. A design-oriented, applied research approach was followed using the Double Diamond model, supported by literature study, stakeholder analysis, data analysis, and a case study. Lean Six Sigma tools, including FMEA, guided risk evaluation. Data analysis showed serial number marking errors had the highest impact. The outcome was an automated marking system for cleanroom use, designed for accuracy, repeatability, and integration into existing workflows with minimal training, thereby enhancing quality and reliability in assembly.
