The Key drivers that impact the supermarket of the future: AI integration
At: University of Twente
This thesis investigates how key drivers define the supermarket of the future, focusing on the roles of artificial intelligence (AI), ethics, and stakeholder needs in shaping food retail into environments that support healthier lifestyles and overall well-being.
Using literature review, stakeholder analysis, scenario building, surveys, and prototyping, two complementary design directions were developed:
- Mobile app "Grocera" - designed for younger, tech-savvy users, offering meal tracking, AI-driven recommendations, and motivational support.
- In-store AI stand - tailored to elderly or less tech-oriented users, providing simplified navigation and health-focused assistance within the supermarket.
The findings suggest that beyond automation and efficiency, the future of supermarkets depends on personalization, inclusivity, and emotional support. By merging digital and physical touchpoints, supermarkets can evolve into ecosystems of care, guiding and motivating healthier food choices.
