From utility to connection: a Human-Centred Design exploration of the baby soother

At: Philips Avent

This thesis, conducted in collaboration with Philips Avent, examines the role of one-piece baby soothers in addressing both the emotional and practical challenges of early parenthood. While the Soothie has long been one of Philips Avent's most popular products, its recent decline in sales suggests shifting consumer preferences. It highlights the need to move beyond functionality toward designs that support parents and babies both practically and emotionally. Through user needs research, market analysis, and concept development, three design directions were explored. Further concept validation revealed a strong parental preference for multifunctional soothers that combine teething and comforting features, as well as those that foster more positive and manageable parenting experiences.
