Digitally Supporting Physical Ergonomics: Research and design of a digital tool for the development and validation of physical ergonomics

At: People Creating Value BV.

This project aimed to optimize physical ergonomics into People Creating Value BV's (PCV's) product development process by designing a digital, fact-based tool. After analyzing PCV's needs, two concept directions were explored: A centralised program combining anthropometric data, mannequins, and assessment methods into one tool or a combination of purpose-specific tools.

The second proved more feasible, focusing on obtaining anthropometric data, visualizing ergonomics, and assessing ergonomics. The result was HERO (Human Ergonomic Reach Overlay), an adjustable SolidWorks part that uses the existing tools DINED and REBA for anthropometric data and ergonomic assessment. HERO visualizes users' reach zones and supports ergonomic development, while remaining easy to use and integrating with the existing workflow. In future development side/front views and sight lines could be added to make it even more valuable.
