Addressing cummunication barriers within transdisciplinary research using a universal boundary object

At: University of Twente

Transdisciplinary research brings together experts, practitioners, policymakers, and communities to address complex challenges. This broad collaboration often leads to practical solutions but is frequently hindered by communication barriers. Differences in language, culture, and priorities can cause misunderstandings, while non-academic participants may struggle with technical discussions.

Within this project, a tool was developed to improve communication in such settings. It combines physical and digital elements to drive structured discussion and foster "controlled confrontation," where participants respectfully challenge each other's views to build understanding. In this activity, users make an island out of 2 types of discs: Hex-Discs represent stakeholder factors, while Island Discs represent project topics. By arranging these components, participants make perspectives visible, negotiate priorities, and document outcomes digitally.
