Smart Pillow: Redesigning a pillow system for postoperative recovery during sleep for patients following shoulder surgery

At: Saxion University of Applied Scienes

This thesis explores the redesign of a pillow system for postoperative recovery for patients following shoulder surgery. A textile pressure sensor and usability testing were used to discover their potential in informing the redesign. Pressure heatmaps of previous iterations were created, but the sensor's low resolution and inaccuracy limited interpretation, meaning they did not contribute much to the redesign process. A new prototype was developed, featuring three pillows: a back pillow, a shoulder pillow, and a belly pillow, that can easily be folded into a compact travel bag. They ensure that the patients maintain the recommended arm-sling position during sleep. Usability testing was conducted to evaluate this prototype, highlighting strengths such as stability and support, as well as limitations and opportunities for further refinement.
