Electric Flight Safety: Disconnecting a Battery During Flight
At: University of Twente
Development for more sustainable ways of aviation is in full swing. Adopting batteries as a power source within an aircraft comes with many safety concerns that should be assessed. This project researches ways batteries and pilots can interact during flight to increase safety. By analysing battery data and avionic design techniques, recommendations have been formed for further and detailed development in the area of user interfaces that manage a battery system. A battery management system should support pilots by monitoring data and by providing advice. Batteries measure an amount of data that pilots simply can not manage themselves. By using thresholds, a management system can inform pilots about the current battery situation in the aircraft. Further development should involve pilots in the design process and should include close coöperation with other departments working on the battery system.
