Shape memory performance of NiTi auxetic structures fabricated with laser metal deposition

At: University of Twente

At the Fraunhofer Innovation Platform for advanced additive manufacturing, students and employees use state of the art 3d printing machines for metallic and polymer materials. For the bachelor assignment, a never seen before combination of nickel-titanium alloy and the laser metal deposition AM-technique has been studied, continuing previous research about the optimisation of the process parameter settings for material and machine.

Through looking at the intended use case in the future, samples have been manufactured and tested through research based design decisions for their performance under cyclic compression, applying knowledge about 3d printing and manufacturing combined with material science. This resulted in iterative print runs with 4 samples of sufficient quality to be tested, finalised through mechanical compression testing and analysis of its result.
