The development of an automated vacuum cleaning tool for the cleaning of fall mats in indoor bouldering gyms
At: Radium Boulders
This thesis explores the development of an automated vacuum cleaning tool designed for fall mats in indoor bouldering gyms, which accumulate high levels of chalk dust, hair, and rubber particles. Current cleaning methods using industrial vacuums are inefficient due to poor manoeuvrability on soft mats, frequent maintenance needs, and limited reach in large gyms. Through literature review, observational research, and interviews with staff and owners at four bouldering gyms, key requirements were identified. The final concept utilises an existing industrial vacuum and modifies it by incorporating a robotic platform, advanced filtration, active nozzles, and autonomous navigation. This solution aims to reduce the total cleaning cost by enhancing cleaning efficiency and maximising independence from an operator. Future work includes building a prototype to evaluate mobility, battery life, and commercial viability.
