Optimisation of the Spreading Unit Module of a Bag in Box Placing Machine

This assignment is about optimising the bag spreader in a bag in box placing machine. The bag spreader is found to be prone to vibrations, because of its high mass and accelerations, and its low stiffness. Therefore, the focus of this thesis is on increasing the stiffness and reducing the mass, so that the deflections during vibration is reduced. This is achieved by looking at alternative geometries, materials, and bearings, where a combination of these three is found to be most optimal. After performing simulations on the bag spreader module where the most optimal geometry and materials are used, it is found that the deflections during vibration are only 12% of the original deflection. When only some of the improvements are implemented, a decrease in deflections is found as well, though not as much.
