Creating an Extended Reality visualisation tool for robotics

Author: Marith Petra Johanna Bökkerink

Client: University of Twente - Information driven Product Development & Engineering (IdPDE)

This project developed a prototype visualisation tool that allows users to view the movements of a robotic arm in an Extended Reality (XR) environment. Using open-source robotics software and Unity, the prototype connects real robot data to a digital twin, enabling operators to understand the data. The tool features a modular structure adaptable to different robots and setups. Evaluation and validation confirmed that it performs real-time visualisation reliably while remaining flexible for future research. The project demonstrates the vital role of visualisation tools in robotics design and provides a foundation for continued development of digital-twin applications in both academia and industry.
