Aiding designers in creating user interfaces for digital twin applications in manufacturing

At: Univerity of Twente research cluster Information driven Product Development & Engineering

This thesis researches how to design a user interface for digital twinning applications in manufacturing. Through research by design, a UI is designed for predictive maintenance on a robot arm performed by a maintenance engineer in a case study. The design process and user testing results are evaluated and reflected upon to identify design and process guidelines. These findings are evaluated to assess their applicability to other predictive maintenance and digital twinning applications. The findings are classified in the following process guidelines: a goal-driven approach, perspective-dependent information, and human-computer collaboration, as well as the following design guidelines: integrated interfaces, communication of information and data visualization. These guidelines aim to help designers the creation of UI for digital twin application, rather than a complete roadmap of the design process.
