Beyond Function: Reducing Stigma Through Cane Design
At: University of Twente
This thesis researches how the experience of young adult cane users can be improved through cane design. Young adults tend to avoid using medical looking canes because of the stigma of disability that is connected to it, even though they can prevent fatigue and provide extra support. Aesthetic customization can improve this.
The final design is a changeable cane cover for foldable canes. They enable customization of the cane without negatively influencing usability. Through interviews and co-design session it was found that this can increase self-confidence and acceptance of cane usage, especially in social settings. The design doesn't fully remove stigma, but it can reduce it and improve the experience of young adult cane users. Furthermore, it demonstrates how a relatively small design choice can influence users' self-image, experiences of stigma and willingness to adopt medical devices in general.
