Independent Cycling for People with Down Syndrome

At: Van Raam B.V.

The aim of this bachelor's research was to determine why and how design interventions should be used to assist persons with Down syndrome in becoming more independent cyclists.

As a result of numerous interviews, prototype tests, and co-design activities with experts and the target group, it became clear how design interventions should be utilized to help cyclists with Down syndrome become more independent. A parent-child tricycle tandem with two steers, one in front and one in back, to allow a child with Down syndrome to practice cycling is a first example of a design intervention that improves independence. A tricycle, an adaptable bicycle for step-by-step learning, and a tandem bicycle that converts to a one-person tricycle are more examples.
