Development of a sleeve to improve experience, comfort and stability in paediatric intravenous therapy

At: Hogeschool Saxion

Paediatric intravenous (IV) therapy is a common procedure in hospitals, as it ensures fast dosing of fluids and is therefore used for multiple applications. However, insertion of an IV is generally seen as the most painful and stressful experience during a child's hospital stay. Therefore, a sleeve was developed that stabilizes the IV line, reduces children's stress and has a warning system for IV dysfunction. To stabilize the IV, a textile band was used to fixate the needle, next to a deformable hybrid textile-plastic splint that immobilizes wrist movement. To decrease stress, an interesting looking sleeve was developed, together with cards that are used to distract children with a seek and find game. Furthermore, various sensors are integrated in the sleeve that detect issues, like infections and oedema, early on.
