Redesigning the DYL Toolkit: Improving the Communication of Information

At: University of Twente.

The DYL toolkit is a design framework to assist autistic young adults and their caregiver to design and develop technologies together that empower the autistic young adult in daily life. This research explores the fundamental concepts of a design process, and the knowledge/skills required to undertake such a process. Following this, the toolkit was evaluated via user tests to gain insights regarding how effectively the toolkit is communicating necessary information to conduct a design activity, as well as how effectively the toolkit supports the required skills needed to conduct a design activity. The conclusion derived is that an instructional video must be developed to enhance the transfer of information from the toolkit to the user. The video was developed around two instructional design frameworks: the twelve principles of multimedia instruction and Merrill's first principles of instruction.
