Development of a Mailable Midstream Urine Collection Device

Jeroen Boorsma

The start-up company Urimon investigates urine samples to detect diseases in an early stage, using biomarkers. Urimon aims to include as many participants as possible for their research. The current urine-sample collection procedure is expensive and not standardized. Expensive, because transportation of the urine sample by participants or delivery service is costly and time consuming.

Not standardized, because differences in individual urine collection procedures may interfere with sample quality and therefore affect the urine analysis accuracy.

For these reasons, a urine collection device was developed that can be sent through regular mail and automatically collects a 50-milliliter midstream urine sample.

This allows Urimon to scale up their research to a national level and at the same time improve sample quality through standardization.
