Patient tissue samples arrive in containers in the gross room and will be processed in cassettes, small thin plastic containers with identification numbers and barcode. These cassettes have to be printed by a technician, while a resident will perform macroscopy on the tissue sample, and deposit the cut tissue in the cassette. The procedure used in the gross room was deemed a risk for patient sample mix-ups. On-demand printing will make it possible for the residents to print cassettes themselves while performing macroscopy, and make this procedure safer. The solution for on-demand printing in the gross room of the LUMC concerns an addition to the printer that can direct the cassettes to two sides, and an interface design that makes accessing the 4 applications that are needed easy and user-friendly.
