Waste separation & collection on NS trains
At: NS (Nederlandse Spoorwegen)
This bachelor assignment analyzed waste management on trains of the NS, aiming to improve waste bin functionality for customers and cleaning employees. The key findings were that predominant waste found on train is residual and plastic. All waste is collected as residual, even if source separation bins are placed on the trains; NS's Green Deal goals require adjusted waste management; Cleaning staff face challenges due to workload and staff shortage.
The initial design focus on waste flow adjustment was abandoned in favor of improving bin design for cleaning employees. Concepts include adding waste bag holders and adjusting the bin openings. Future designs could combine concepts for efficiency. In conclusion, to work towards more sustainable waste removal on the NS trains in the future, the current waste collection and removal methods first have to be optimized.
