Development and optimisation of a fibular cutting guide for mandibular reconstruction surgery

In up to 56% of oral cavity cancer cases, the mandibular bone is invaded, necessitating surgical excision and reconstruction using fibula grafts. The current technique to perform this operation uses 3D-printed cutting guides to obtain the fibula grafts. The patient-specific nature of the guides make the logistics time consuming and costly. This thesis, in collaboration with The Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI-AvL), aims to develop a universal, software-assisted fibula-cutting guide that allows real-time surgical adjustments. The successfully created 3D-printed prototype offers a user-friendly design but requires further development and testing.
