Navigation Device for Older Adults with Dementia in Care Homes
At: University of Twente
As the global population ages, there is an increasing need for technology that addresses the
specific needs of older adults, particularly those with dementia. This project focuses on
designing a navigation device tailored to older adults with early- and middle-stage dementia in
care homes. The goal was to create a user-friendly device that enhances mobility and
independence, supporting physical activity and well-being.
Traditional navigation aids are often too complex for individuals with dementia. Thus, a user-
centered design approach was adopted, involving research and expert interviews to understand
the target group's needs. The final design, a digital compass, combines visual and auditory
instructions, simplifying navigation while accommodating different sensory perceptions. With
further development, this device has the potential to significantly improve the quality of life of
its users.
