Designing a hydrogen based energy storage solution for the DSM Sunlight building

At: Huygen

This thesis explores the design and implementation of a hydrogen-based energy storage solution for the DSM Sunlight building. The focus is on creating a system that stores surplus renewable energy as hydrogen, which can later be converted back into electricity when needed. Through the use of decision matrices it was found that a combination of a polymer electrolyte membrane electrolyser, compressed gaseous storage and a polymer electrolyte fuel cell would be a suitable solution. The concept was developed further and it was determined that it would be best to use four 40 kW electrolysers, a small, 3 MPa buffer tank, two 20 m3, 25 MPa storage tanks, four 35 m3, 45 MPa storage tanks and four 45 kW fuel cells.
