The Automatic Crimper

At: Allinq

For the network administrator of KPN, Allinq, a crimper tool had to be redesigned that is used to maintain the underground copper infrastructure. Cables containing up to 1800 wires need to be connected, one by one, with a tool that is inefficient and causes significant risks on ergonomic health. After researching several evaluation methods and analyzing the situation, concepts along with a physical model have been developed leading to a final solution. The final concept uses the same, proven principle as the original tool but now automates a part of the process which decreases repetitiveness. By incorporating a principle found in another tool that makes use of a reel-in-a-box supply system and because of the ability to insert multiple wire pairs at once, the concept is 49% faster than the original tool. This saves a lot of money and time.
