Creating Effective Interfaces in Autonomous Machines
At: University of Twente
An autonomous machine can perform tasks without any help of a person. But the level of autonomy of autonomous machines vary from completely manual to full autonomy. Electronics development and manufacturing company Benchmark Electronics therefore issued an assignment to find a way to create an effective interface between a human and any autonomous machine.
For this assignment a set of guidelines were created, which were then applied in a design case. The guidelines consists of two parts: the first part helps to quantify the level of autonomy of the machine, the second part offers guidelines for the actual design of the interface between human and autonomous machine. The design case involved the design of an interface between a collaborative robot called the YuMi and the operator it collaborates with.
