Improvement of a compostable diaper insert based on sphagnum
At: Studio Tjeerd Veenhoven
Studio Tjeerd Veenhoven is working on a compostable diaper alternative to reduce the environmental impact of disposable diapers. The compostable diaper uses sphagnum as an absorbing material, this is a peat moss variant that has high water holding capacities. For this bachelor assignment the existing prototypes were improved on leakage and comfort.
After researching and testing the materials, the compostability and the production methods the result is a functional diaper insert that has an improved geometry which increases both the comfort and the water tightness. This is achieved by adding several design features to create a similar geometry as existing diapers and by adding a compostable plastic layer to ensure water tightness.
